Composer, multi-instrumentalist and vocalist Taj Mahal is one of the most prominent and influential figures in late 20th century blues and roots music. Though his career began more than four decades ago with American blues, he has broadened his artistic scope over the years to include music representing virtually every corner of the world. His creativity knows no bounds and his explorations of roots music continue to result in powerful musical collaborations and very danceable recordings.

Shemekia Copeland is the daughter of Blues legend Johnny Copeland. Her powerful voice is guaranteed to raise your spirits – and the roof!

CiTR presents: Renny Wilson | Movieland | Fake Tears

At The Biltmore Cabaret
Tuesday, April 23, 2013
After almost a decade of struggle, strain, and delay, the debut record from Edmontonian Renny Wilson has now seen the light. His first ever release Sugarglider draws blood from disco keystones such as Bad Girls, and the spirit of Arthur Russell. Common elements of chillwave, krautrock, and a healthy dose of Haunted Graffiti can also be heard in a bold, tempo-matched digital-delay. The contrast of upbeat music and melancholy lyrical content provide a tasty combination for any groove-oriented listener. Tap this valiant freshman effort into your varicose, and you’ll find yourself crying vaseline tears of self-pity on the dance floor.
DOORS AT 8:00pm

The Arts Report – April 17 – SPIN, Full Frontal, Clusterfun Forever!

Tonight on the Arts Report at 5pm! Three segments, no pre recording!

Maegan reviews SPIN by evalyn parry which runs at the Cultch until this Saturday, April 20th.

Then, Sara Lapsley speaks in studio Katie Schroeder, Master’s Candidate in the Critical and Curatorial Studies program at UBC, curator of “Full Frontal” at the Satellite Gallery, a show featuring works which consider masculinity . “With works spanning over 50 years, Full Frontal investigates the stake our society has placed in representations of the male body, questioning why “manhood” refers to both male identity and the physical penis. Through photographs, paintings, drawings, sculpture, video and archival material, Full Frontal explores how artists, both publically and privately, have represented the penis-phallus.” (www.satellitegallery.com)

And to lighten the mood – though we’re sure phallus content will surface  - Adam Patemen is in studio to tell us the low down on the Clusterfun experience, and  ClusterFun Forever! April 22nd at Havana. Check out their video (note: this is for last month’s show!):
