Broadcast on 21-Jan-2008

9:00pm - 11:59pm

Sal Nistico was a great tenor saxophonist who left us far too soon. He was born in Syracuse, New York on April 2,1938 and died at 53 in Berne, Switzerland. Sal was most famous for his off and on stay with Woody Herman's band in the 60's but he loved to just play in small clubs with a quartet and he found those clubs throughout Europe. We hear Sal with a great German trio with Joe Haider on piano,Gunther Lenz on bass and Joe Nay on drums. Sal plays compositions by Haider and Lenz and one by himself and the standard, 'Invitation'. Sal Nistico could tell a story and he does here on "Just For Fun' recorded in 1976.
