Queer FM Episode March 28, 2023

QueerFM Featured Guests: KAS BAKER Musician and 1 of the main characters of the documentary 'TRANSformation'/

8:00am - 10:00am

KAS BAKER (he/him) one of the stars of Krow’s TRANSformation, a gripping award-winning documentary that showcases the lives and experiences of 3 trans subjects, including internationally recognized Canadian fashion model Krow Kian, his friends Kas Baker and Ashton and their families. At 12-years-old, KROW began his career as a fashion model, but he never felt fully comfortable, despite the attention and praise. At 18, Krow embarked on the journey towards physically becoming a man, cutting off his ponytail and pausing his career as a model in order to begin the process of transitioning.

Shot over 3 years of honest interviews and life transitions, we witness the continual challenges faced by Krow, including hormones and surgeries. As he grows in confidence in his new body, he returns to his career in the fashion industry, taking his first ever job as a male model along with an epic journey to the runway of Paris Fashion Week. The project began as an educational tool for schools, but its reach has extended across the world.

This week, there will be two important film screenings and conversations taking place on the eve of International Trans Day of Visibility; a day dedicated to celebrating the accomplishments of transgender and gender nonconforming people while raising awareness of the work we all need to do for trans justice.

First there will be a screening in Ottawa to Members of Parliament, Senators and with an invitation out to the Prime Minister, on March 30th, 2023; the eve of International Trans Day of Visibility. And there will be a free screening in Vancouver to celebrate International Trans Day of Visibility at Cineworks on March 31st, 2023.

We are proud to welcome to QueerFM Artist, Musician KAS BAKER, one of the main subjects, and definitely a main “character” of the film, who lives happily in Deep Cove, creating music and looking for their next great adventure. This character-driven film follows Abbie as she departs for college, leaving behind her parents Mark and Tish, and her brother Kayden who has autism and is non-verbal. As she explores her newfound independence with her roommate and falls in love with a girl named Karly, Abbie is torn between her new life and the guilt of leaving her brother as her family struggles to care for him in her absence.

With a passion for authenticity, these two communities are highlighted through the diverse hiring of crew, licensed music only from these two communities, and authentic casting.
