New Music Review By Mark Hjorthoy
Illustrious (Martyn Ware | Charles Stooke) – Mesmerine 111
3D soundscapes from Martyn Ware and Charles Stooke? Yes please! “This is a 3D soundscape based on / inspired by the frequency 111Hz…” states the accompanying Cold Spring Records presser. “Findings of MRI scans suggest that at exactly 111Hz, the brain switches off the prefrontal cortex, deactivating the language centre, and temporarily switches from left to right-sided dominance, which is responsible for intuition, creativity, holistic processing, inducing a state of meditation or a trance.” I dare you to tell me you’re not intrigued! So worth a listen. You won’t be disappointed.
Madeleine Cocolas – Syndesis
Where ambient meets conscious thought is where this album lives. Not only is each sound perfectly crafted and placed exactly where they need to be, the result is nothing short of breathtaking. Created with field recordings from Greece, this is a love letter to the world. A personal journey made wide that sings and lets your mind set sail. A beautiful way to begin your day.
Sonologyst – Planetarium
Never one to rest on his laurels, Sonologyst is back with what can only be described as an aural adventure through the cosmos. The droning background fits like he’s been to space himself. The groaning noises in the background take me back to ’50s sci-fi classic Forbidden Planet and the masterful electronic soundtrack it provided. Not that this album sounds like it. Far from it! This feels like you’re in orbit over Jupiter, and experiencing it for the first time. The depth he’s able to portray in every piece makes this a must listen to anyone who dreams of travelling through space. I’m going in for another listen, and then another. It’s totally worth it.
Nick Sylvester – Stereo Music For Breakbeats and Samplers
On first listen, this reminded me of the sonic experiments that Coldcut were doing in the late ’90s, but with a much deeper and precise understanding of sounds. On second listen, I was absolutely intrigued with how the music is juggled expertly. This is a plethora of noises that are mangled beyond recognition, and fit so seamlessly together, that it takes you on a journey you’ve never been on before. An experimental masterpiece, and one I am grateful to have heard.
Night Sky Pulse – Chromosphere
This is one of those albums that you can play on a long road trip and feel like you’re in a dream state. The lush pads and perfect noises mate like they have always been together. This album puts me in the best mood. It radiates positivity while keeping your attention locked. Brilliant and soulful, this is a mood lifter of the highest order. It never lets you down.
