New Music Review By Mark Hjorthoy
Andrew Staniland – The Laws Of Nature
Some albums I hear catch my attention quickly. They say a lot right off the bat and keep you glued to it. This is one of those albums. So many pulsing and singing sounds blended with noises that tell stories beyond the titles. A ride that surprises you with each play. It’s one of those albums where you keep hearing more with each listen. Make sure you hear it at least three times. You’ll be rewarded when you do.
Gayle Young | Robert Wheeler – From Grimsby To Milan
When you mix the synth guru from Pere Ubu with an experimental musician who makes her own instruments, it’s impossible to predict where this album will go. The beautiful part is that the entire listen is something I haven’t heard before. The sounds scrape and wheeze with expert control. The synths cry and bubble, and together they both shine. I really love how Gayle’s homemade instruments are multipurpose. You can tap, slap, pluck and bow them to evoke emotion. They play on your ability to listen and when you do, you’re graced with a brilliant album you’ll not soon forget. I hope they work together again soon.
