Storytelling is powerful. Our stories carry our personal and collective histories, build bridges of understanding, and shine light on unseen truths.
CiTR is excited to offer its Power in Voice program in the Fall and Spring of 2024/2025.
Designed to provide space, support and resources to aspiring storytellers, podcasters, and radio artists – Power in Voice will guide two cohorts of participants through a narrative spoken word audio project of their choice. This is an entry level, paid educational program created to surpass traditional barriers to entry into this medium, such as experience, skill level, comfort, or financial accessibility.
The program will run in two, independent 17-week cohorts. One in the Fall of 2024, the next in the Spring of 2025. Participants are encouraged to apply for consideration in the cohort that best fits their schedule.
Cohort 1: November 2024 – April 2025
Cohort 2: April 2025 – August 2025
Focusing on skills development, participants will have the option to create a long-form audio documentary or short mini-series through a combination of structured training, group exercises, workshops, one-on-one mentorship and over-the-shoulder training with CiTR staff.
You can review the syllabus for this program, here.
Participation in the program requires a notable time commitment, and the availability/ability to attend sessions on-campus at UBC throughout the duration of the cohort.
Participants should expect to dedicate 3-4 hours per week to program work – though this may fluctuate in the second half of the curriculum when work becomes more self-directed.
All over the age of 18 may apply, no past experience in podcasting or radio is required. CiTR strongly encourages aspiring podcast/radio producers and storytellers with marginalized lived experience(s) to apply.
PLEASE NOTE: While participants may select a topic of their choice, ‘true crime’ or otherwise extractive forms of storytelling will not be considered.
