New Music Reviews By Mark Hjorthoy

Capricorn Pneumatici – Al-Azif

The history of this release is fascinating. Recorded underground in vitrified cement tanks, using air hammers, PVC pipes, metal, hammers etc. and all with no overdubs. I can’t imagine how difficult it must have been to put this together and let the album flow. But it does. It’s brilliant. Originally, it came out in 1987 on cassette, and Eighth Tower Records has brought it back, and I for one am thankful for that. Discovering a true golden piece of music is a great joy for me, and this shines golden for days. Seriously cool. You need to hear this.

Francis Théberge & Axophobe – Lauter Rhythmus

Speaking of an album of sounds, Lauter Rhythmus is captivating. When I’m listening to it, little movies start rolling in my head. I see myself in an empty factory running at maximum capacity, but I’m the only one there to witness it. It reminds me of the many times I am walking down the street and hear an amazing piece of music, and when I get closer, it’s a construction site. Expertly placed noises and sounds that make you feel like you were lucky enough to stumble on to a brilliant sound palace by accident. I love this.
