Unceded Airwaves Episode October 26, 2016

S2E3 - DJ Shub, How-to-Halloween and Food Sovereignty

1:01pm - 2:06pm

In Season 2 Episode 3 we chat with DJ Shub, who is a Mohawk artist from 6 Nations, and a former member of A Tribe Called Red. He has his first solo EP coming out December 2nd! We also have an Unceded Airwaves exclusive track to play from Powwow Step! DJ Shub is also in Vancouver October 27th at Fortune Sound Club! We have a special segment created by Indigenous Collective member Mario Parent who is Nisga’a and currently attending UBC. This segment is on the topic of Food Sovereignty, where Mario chats with Julian Napoleon from the faculty of Land and Food Systems at UBC, Dr. Lee Brown and Musqueam elder Shane Point - both elders from the Urban Wellness Program at the UBC Farm.

We talk about Indigenous events coming up in Vancouver, and recap on the insensitiveness of Indigenous cultural appropriation as it appears in Halloween costumes. Mario Parent, Mat Andreatta and Lisa Girbav discuss other ways to enjoy Halloween (or not!). Music this week includes a lot of new tracks from JB the First Lady, DJ Shub, Mob Bounce, and Dean Hunt - expect a lot of good electronic and hip-hop. You can submit songs to play on the show via Twitter and Facebook with the hashtag #uncededmusic, and get a shoutout on the air!

Unceded Airwaves is put together every week by UBC's Indigenous Radio Collective. We are committed to centering the voices of Native people and offering alternative narratives that empower Native people and their stories.
