A classic by drum master Chico Hamilton and his Quintet:"Passin' Thru"

9:02pm - 12:51am

Tonight's Jazz Feature is an album called "Passin' Thru" by The New Chico Hamilton Quintet. Drummer Chico Hamilton had already played with just about everyone including, Duke Ellington, Lionel Hampton, Charles Mingus, Billie Holiday and Gerry Mulligan to name only a few so by the time he formed his first rather innovative Quintet in 1955 he was very well known. The Quintet was one of the most successful small bands of the 50s and amassed a large audience who liked the instrumentation (saxophone/flute, guitar, cello, bass and drums) but by 1961 Chico tired of the rather polite conservative Jazz that had been the staple of the Quintet and looked for a more adventurous setting within the quintet size. He disbanded and found a whole new group of young and energetic musicians and formed the band you hear tonight as "The New Chico Hamilton Quintet". Charles Lloyd on tenor saxophone and flute was a then newcomer,. Lloyd was valuable too as he wrote interesting tunes. We'll hear 4 of them tonight. Trombonist George Bohanon is one of the finest voices of the trombone with his big buttery sound and he a Lloyd blend very well. The guitarist is someone who became a major voice. Gabor Szabo came to America during the Hungarian Revolution and brought some of his culture to his instrument and blending this with some Middle eastern influences as well. Truly a unique guitar voice. Young Albert Stinson could have become one of the finest bassists on the planet as he was already on his way on this date, his first with a major band. He died of a drug overdose in 1968 sad to say. Chico Hamilton performs here with a fire and his incredible ability to adapt to any tempo and feel. This is truly a classic date done in September of 1962 and stands as the finest recorded statement by this ensemble. "Passin' Thru!" indeed!
