Monday, February 13th is the First Annual World Radio Day. World Radio Day “seeks [to] raise awareness about the importance of radio, facilitate access to information through radio and enhance networking among broadcasters. Radio has to be recognized as a low cost medium, specifically suited to reach remote communities and vulnerable people: the illiterate, the disabled, women, youth and the poor, while offering a platform to intervene in the public debate, irrespective of people’s educational level.”

The university’s exciting new concert project initiative brings UBC music students into the soundscape of the University of British Columbia’s campus and community.

The Music on the Mind UBC student campus concerts present music performances in the most accessible of venues: free public space. After all, music must be heard to be appreciated.

January 13th enjoy the SUB Symphonics series outside the AMS Student Union Building OR Inside the AMS Student Union Building in the art gallery if the weather is inhospitable.

January 27th enjoy the Classical Coffee series at the UBC Bean Around the World.

The 13th Chair
Love a good game of Clue? Addicted to Agatha Christie? Then ‘The 13th Chair’ is the show for you! Harkening back to the roaring 20s in New York City, the Crosby’s are throwing a party in celebration of their son’s engagement. To add some excitement, a medium, Madame Rosalie La Grange, was invited to conduct a seance and during the darkness of the ritual, a murder occurs. A detective comedy of sorts, ‘The 13th Chair’ has lots of clues and hints that’ll keep the audience following along and of course, no murder mystery is complete without shocking plot twists.

Crazy Love
If you ever thought your ex-girlfriend was crazy, think again. Crazy Love is a documentary that follows the insane relationship between successful attorney Burt Pugach and the beautiful Linda Riss in the 1950s. All high glamour and ritz of a wealthy lawyer, the whirlwind romance continued until Linda found out about Burt’s real family, his distraught wife and his disabled daughter. When Linda leaves and settled down with another man, Burt’s love turned obsessive and the affair turned violent.

Tyranahorse

The first SHiNDiG semi-final battle will be on November 15, at its usual venue: The Railway Club. The first three winners – Real Boys, The Killed Spirits and Tyranahorse – will take over the stage to contest a space in the final.

SHiNDiG 2011 started on September 13 and the winner will be decided on December 6. The three top finalists will earn prizes, as well the audience – telling jokes for Granville Island beer, $10 gift certificates at Zulu Records, Mint CD samplers and CiTR T-shirts.

Bands:
Winner of the first week, Real Boys, is a Greater Vancouver indie band formed by Everett Morris, Drew Riekman, Stephen O’Shea and Liam Hamilton, all members of other bands: You Say Party!, Oh No! Yoko, GSTS!.
The Killed Spirits is a punk/hardcore/indie band formed in 2008 by Matty Chenier, Dave Hallman and Sean Kilby, guys who released their 12 tracks digital album on May, named Death and Langley.

Fronted by the singer PrOphecy Sun, Tyranahorse members include Darren Fleet, Brent Glasgow Brown, Max Stockholder and Jaro Welz. Tyranahorse is strongly influenced by 80′s rock bands and the performance art of PrOphecy Sun.
