Tenor saxophonist Walter Benton was an incredible player who like many great musicians got little recognition. He never recorded much but this album stands out. Walter is heard with Freddie Hubbard and Miles Davis’ rhythm section, Wynton Kelly (piano), Paul Chambers (bass), Jimmy Cobb (drums). “Out of This World” show Walter to be a major player.

Guitarist Jim Hall had a long history in Modern Jazz. Here is his first date under his own name with piano legend Carl Perkins and bass great Red Mitchell.”Jazz Guitar” done in L.A. in 1957 put Mr. Hall on the map and he never looked back.

This is a rare one called “Down Home Reunion:The Young Men From Memphis”. A fine date by all Memphis-born players like piano genius Phineas Newborn Jr. Trumpeters Booker Little and Louis Smith, alto saxophone master Frank Strozier and tenor saxophone giant George Coleman along with Calvin Newborn on guitar, George Joyner (aka Jamil Nasser) on bass and Charles Crosby on drums. Four long jam tunes where everyone gets the spotlight. Solid stuff and fun!
That’s a rap for February and a belated Happy New Year to all at Discorder for 2017.
